Handcrafted Ringing Bell & Vajra

The Tibetan bell ('drilbu', Sanskrit ‘ghanta’) and Vajra (Tibetan ‘Dorje’) are central ritual objects in Vajrayana Buddhism, symbolizing the union of Wisdom and Compassion that leads to Enlightenment. The Drilbu bell and the Vajra (Tibetan ‘Dorje’) represent “method” (Vajra) and “wisdom” (bell). Combined together, they symbolize Enlightenment as they embody the union of all dualities.

The bell, held in the left hand, represents the feminine principle and the wisdom of emptiness, while the dorje (or vajra), held in the right hand, symbolizes the masculine principle and skillful, compassionate action. Together, they embody the inseparability of form and emptiness.

The sound and the shape of the hollow bell signifies emptiness, or the true nature of all things. By understanding and accepting the “empty”/true nature of all things, we become free of attachment and are therefore liberated from suffering. Rich with symbolic meaning, the bell contains representations of Prajnaparamita, the Great Mother, and features intricate designs like the vajra fence, lotus petals, and five wisdom jewels, all conveying spiritual truths and protection. Upon ringing (just 1 tap is enough), the bell creates an incredible chiming vibration that can be heard long after it has been played. 

The dorje, known for its indestructibility and thunderbolt-like power, often features five prongs symbolizing the Five Buddhas, Five Perfections, and other key Buddhist teachings. Its symmetrical structure signifies the unity of relative and absolute truth. Through their profound symbolism, the bell and dorje express the totality of the enlightened mind and reality.
